The Roman Lakes
During the industrial revolution Manchester developed
into a major manufacturing city. At this time Mellor developed into
an industrial centre where mills and factories were powered by
the fast flowing
river Goyt.
The 'Roman
Lakes' provided
the source of water required to power the mills owned by Samuel
Oldknow a local industrialist.
The 'Roman Lakes' has no known connection to Roman times
but was developed as an early leisure facility by the Victorians.
It
now hosts
a number of activities including angling, canoeing, mountain biking
and rambling.
