Mellor Country House

Mellor Country House is a UK charity, built in 1907, set in three acres of garden and woodland located in the pretty village of Mellor. The charity is dedicated to providing respite breaks for groups, families, carers and individuals primarily from the nearby urban areas who could not, otherwise, have a break at all. The Charity's aim is to make a difference by providing a safe, secure, relaxing and uplifting environment for the financially and socially disadvantaged. For many of the people who stay at the house, this break from the hardships of their day-to-day existence can be their only holiday and, literally, be a life-saver.

About Our House

Accommodation for up to 24 guests is provided in 11 bedrooms on a self-catering basis with a well equipped kitchen, dining room, restful lounges and children's playroom. We also have a disabled suite with two beds and a beautiful bathroom including a luxurious spa bath. Outside, the grounds include a secure play area for toddlers, a bike track for the older children, a paved patio with barbeque, lots of room for everyone to run around and a private lawn area with benches and seating for quiet reflection.

Where is Mellor?

Mellor Country House is located in the pretty village of Mellor, situated on the border between Greater Manchester and the High Peak

Can we stay?

Visitors are referred by other Charities and Social Services or by personal approach, from urban areas of Greater Manchester, Stockport and Salford. At the house we provide the setting for training and development for some of our visitors e.g. youth groups to improve their employability through a series of planned exercises and team building events. These include life skills, Job Search, Numeracy and Literacy.

How can we support Mellor?

We are a small charity with one year's reserves run by a Management Committee of volunteers. Our financial resources are stretched to meet rising costs for maintaining and running the building as we heavily subsidise the people in need who come to stay with us. We have managed to keep the interior décor refreshed through groups of volunteers from several business’ using the house as a team building project. The House is totally self- funded, relying on donations and support from the local community, companies, groups and individuals who are acknowledged throughout this site. It costs thousands of pounds each year to keep the house and grounds in repair, serviced and fully equipped to provide the breaks that are increasingly needed by more and more people living in poverty and very dire circumstances.

Location of Mellor

Situated at the foot of the Peak District, Mellor has the ideal location to provide Mellor Country House guests with a picturesque and relaxing environment away from the pressures of the urban inner-city life. The village starts at the bottom of a valley in Longhurst Lane and extends for 3 miles with the road winding up a hill becoming Moor End Road where most of the older part of the village is situated. The Church of St Thomas 's dominates the hill overlooking the village and surrounding countryside around Mellor which is a magnificent land mark for everyone.
Etherow Country Park

Etherow Country Park

One of Britain's first country parks Etherow Country Park was established in 1968 around an old cotton mill. It is a place of conserved natural habitats and industrial heritage which is visited by literally thousands of people each year, who come to enjoy the many recreational activities on offer and the beauty of the wider park.

Roman Lakes

Roman Lakes

During the industrial revolution Manchester developed into a major manufacturing city. At this time Mellor developed into an industrial centre where mills and factories were powered by the fast flowing river Goyt. The ' Roman Lakes ' provided the source of water required to power the mills owned by Samuel Oldknow a local industrialist. The 'Roman Lakes' has no known connection to Roman times but was developed as an early leisure facility by the Victorians. It now hosts a number of activities including angling, canoeing, mountain biking and rambling.

Brabyn's Park

Brabyn's Park

Bordered by the river Goyt and the Peak Forest Canal, Brabyn's Park in Marple Bridge consists of parkland, woodland, riverside walks and playing fields. The park features a BMX / mountain bike track. Originally the estate of Brabyn's Hall, the park was first opened to the public in 1947.

"Thank you for all you are doing in running such a lovely house so we can relax and enjoy it and its surroundings. Lots of space and lots to do around the area, lots of opportunities to go out and about in the countryside."

Hospitality and Kindness

Hospitality and Kindness

Thank you for your hospitality and many acts of kindness. The boys and I enjoyed ourselves ever so much. Our lives have been chaotic, starting again and it was a wonderful opportunity for us to spend some memorable time together. Mellor Country house is a very welcoming, calming retreat, where I was able to both unwind and reflect. I particularly enjoyed cooking for the boys and us all sitting down in the dining room together. We are looking forward to our next visit in the autumn. I imagine that the gardens will look beautiful at that time of year.
Lastly thank you for treating us to the play room and our little chat. You really helped to put a positive perspective on my problems. I know I am very fortunate to have the quality time with the boys, even if it can be full on and tiring. They are worth all the hard work. Thank you. "
